ceiling panels
We have a dropped ceiling in our basement and are going to replace the acoustic ceiling panels with something more healthy. We're not sure what to use. The metal grid framework will accept panels about 2' x 3'.

If the grid will support the weight of a thin sheet of glass that might be workable. Frosted glass would soften the effect. Fabric could be stretched over the back of the glass. Looking up from below, there would first be a layer of glass against the grid, and the fabric would be behind the glass.
they have metal-I think tin-celing tiles. I'm not certain of what sizes they come in but I know some sesitive people who have used them as celing tiles and as backsplashes in kitchens. they come in white, metallic colors and some others.
You are right to avoid regular ceiling tiles. They are made of either fiberglass or rockwool/mineral wool. Fiberglass has formaldehyde based resins which is cured, so supposedly not a concern. Mineral wool tiles have microban as an inhibitor of mold and such. Both shed fiber particulate that irritates lungs and skin. I get itchy walking in any building that has them.
Back in years they used to use stamped tin for ceilings. Searching for tin ceiling tiles brought up a lot of results, including at Armstrong -- their Metallaire line that appears to be sold at Lowes. You could also cut drywall to size and paint whatever color. Same thing with plywood, you could seal and paint it.
No, I don't think its bad idea. I have also used same idea for my ceilings during renovation of my house.
